Google Maps Show Sponsored Listings

Google has apparently been integrating Google Maps in with Sponsored Listings of places such as hotels. ClickZ.com reports that such as a search as this gives results not only with free listings but with sponsored listings as well. This is a test to see how well people (and companies) respond to paid placement — for any product under Google. Google Maps has been used for quite some time now, rather their API has been, to give listings for companies like CraigsList or directions to a school. Many sites simply hook-in with the API, input their own coordinates, and automagically the directions/location appears before you. Now with all that already in place, Google has the functionality to input extra listings in order to give these companies more publicity and better viewing. Offering free services like Google does, nearly always will come with a price.

The next item we should be looking for is what they are going to be doing with Google Earth. While yes, Google Earth is already offered as a premium service, we may see sponsored listings popping up in the free version as well — simply because “there is no such thing as a free lunch — unless you’re on the Google campus in Mountain View, CA“. Main idea, keep your eyes open for new sponsored listings popping up here and there around Google products.

Hello? Earth to Mac…? Hello?

Google has been in the shop putting together a version of Google Earth just for Macs. With it’s recent release, we can finally breath easy so that these avid users of Mac can now browse and see where Mr. Gates lives — I guess they wanted to see Disneyland too. Google has been a large sponsor of Open Source projects in the past, which is still a surprise to why they have not yet released versions targeted for the Linux based operating system — yet I’m sure someone will release a version now that there is a Mac edition out. The Mac-ies can now look in their own backyard, peered even from distant lands — but Google finally released the Mac version of this wonderful software that [us] windows users have enjoyed for so long.

iGoogle of the Future

Google, with a big surprise to the community, had a leak of the Mac version of Google Earth. This is one of the first products being released to Mac OS X from the Google product line. There is no official release about this Mac version, but the article from AppleInsider.com helped confirm that the product works seamlessly on the OS X platform. This could be the start of a long line of products and support for the Mac platform that we could have never seen coming.

It’s about time they start developing on the Linux/Unix side of things instead of focusing purely on the Windows platform. Microsoft and Google have been battling head to head for quite some time and this will help submerge that battle quite a bit. We will post back if any official news is released about this new product.

Google Heads Over to Science

You heard right. It seems that unusual species names aren’t limited to scientists’ favorite rock stars or Star Wars figures - now Internet search engines are in the game. Entomologist Brian Fisher named a new species of ant, Proceratium google, in honor of the mapping program Google Earth. Fisher, who chairs the entomology department at the California Academy of Sciences, was impressed with the support he got from the Google Earth team when he was integrating the online warehouse of ant data, AntWeb, with the search functions of Google Earth. Now scientists can plot ant habitats in three dimensions or search for ant species by location. For the record, P. google lives in Madagascar and feasts exclusively on spider eggs. Not much else can be said. Google is becoming more and more global every day. When you think they have reached their limit of getting across to people and customers, they go ahead and do it again. Not specifically Google themselves doing the job this time, but Google’s name is mentioned and written down in the history books once again. Google seems to be writing history day in and day out. Every moment I get a chance to read up in the news, Google appears somewhere on the page without a doubt. In my experience, I haven’t seen a company with this much publicity for quite some time.
