Another One For Google — Writely.

Writely ( www.writely.com ) is a web-based word processing application. Google recently went through and scooped them up to become part of the Google Corporation. Writely did a little write-up about the acquisition. What part might this company play into Google? Well, Google has had rumors in the past of developing their hopefully upcoming Web Office Suite — as I may call it — which would be basically Microsoft Office, with many changes of course, but all on the web. How would this be useful for companies? One huge factor would be licensing flexibility. You can buy access for 20 users and have a company of 30 and only use those 20 at one time. Instead with any other Office Suite, you’re looking at buying 30 licenses, no matter if you’re using them all at the same time or not. So in the end, Google has put forth some cash and took on a good application to help better their new Office Suite application which we will hopefully be seeing soon.

Google OS & Software

“Definitely, and we have systems running over there (Google) right now,” he said. He also said that Google is thinking about whether it wants to be running its own data centers and developing its own software.

He added that Google created its own operating system to run its grids. And now there are some within Google that question whether they should continue doing that, especially since there is so much open source software, and middleware available (from Sun, of course :-) and increasingly, specialist grid builders.

Google has been thinking and rethinking the thoughts of creating their own software as such. Google OS (see below) has already been in production in various locations owned by Google, for internal use only. Google is considering outsourcing future infrastructure projects, which would make sense for them to do — but again, only time will tell what actually happens with the future of Google and its software.

DivX Opens Up Shop With Google

LAS VEGAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Jan. 6, 2006–DivX Inc. and Google Inc. today announced the companies will work together to make Google Video accessible on consumer electronics devices, enabling consumers to bring their video content into the connected home and with them anywhere they go.

Google is going to start formatting with DivX and hopefully bring more of a push for DivX users in the world. A good portion of the world only knows of DivX and has never actually used the software — this push will be good to get their name out there and start selling more products. DivX is not only making the push with Google Video, but they are also making the push with 50 million other devices to be available for the software.

Team Motorola Clicks on Google

Motorola and Google have both entered into an agreement to be media partners. Motorola is making a big push for global media search and they chose Google to be the provider of the service. Financial details were not disclosed. Motorola did agree to put Google logos and icons in their applications for easy one-touch Google access which will drive even more traffic to the already-famous search engine.

Google and Microsoft Settle Down With Lee

Yesterday, December 23rd 2005, Google and Microsoft came to terms about the newly hired Kai-Fu Lee by Google. There have been many rumors and discussions about the liability and breach of contracts by Google, Microsoft, and Lee. The settlement recently came to terms and they are finally willing to just stop the whole deal. The terms of the ‘non-compete’ contract were in breach by Lee being hired by Google. The dispute really ratcheted up some nerves between the companies as they are competing in the same industry of search, advertising, and products. With a surprise, the two companies came to terms but would not disclose any of the Terms and Conditions to the public, but it seems that it has finally been resolved.

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates testified in September that Lee was “one of the top two'’ people influencing the company’s strategy in China.

It seems that Lee was a ‘hot product’ on the market and that Gates really did have an eye on him and wanted to keep him. Google got the better end of the deal and now is looking to push forward with the services of Lee for the company.

The History of Google — Stanford Stocked Up and Out

Google’s search technology, contrary to popular belief, is not owned by Google themself. They are actually using technology that has been licensed to them by Stanford. Google technology has been patented by Stanford and they have a multi-year agreement for the usage. Along side of this agreement, Stanford owns, well rather owned, a little over 1.8 million shares of stock in Google. This was roughly about 10% of the company. Stanford recently sold most of these shares for $336 million.

Google WiFi Is Not That Far Away

Reports have shown that Google is making a push for the Google WiFi to go up around June 2006. This WiFi network would still be just for Mountain View, CA and not for any other cities surrounding. The current plans that were approved last month would be a network of 72,000 residents. Each client being limited to 300 kbit/s, that’s still quite a bit of bandwidth and network utilization. Yes, I am sure Google has that kind of capability, but this will still be quite a service for the neighborhood kids and families. The Google WLAN will be a local portal for their adserver, AdWords, to provide a local advertising network when people search using their engine.
