Another One For Google — Writely.

Writely ( www.writely.com ) is a web-based word processing application. Google recently went through and scooped them up to become part of the Google Corporation. Writely did a little write-up about the acquisition. What part might this company play into Google? Well, Google has had rumors in the past of developing their hopefully upcoming Web Office Suite — as I may call it — which would be basically Microsoft Office, with many changes of course, but all on the web. How would this be useful for companies? One huge factor would be licensing flexibility. You can buy access for 20 users and have a company of 30 and only use those 20 at one time. Instead with any other Office Suite, you’re looking at buying 30 licenses, no matter if you’re using them all at the same time or not. So in the end, Google has put forth some cash and took on a good application to help better their new Office Suite application which we will hopefully be seeing soon.

Updated Adsense Products Page

Google has updated the AdSense product page again. When going to AdSense Setup in your control panel, you will now see this

new adsense products

They have made it a bit…more user friendly — in my opinion. Hopefully this will clear up anything for the new publishers and make it easier to access things.

That Annoying Little Box…

For about a week, Google had that annoyling little ‘contact’ box that would appear when hovering over an email or contact address. They finally decided to remove the box because people were unhappy with it — and I’m very thankful they did.

side note: I’m enjoying having RSS feeds in the header, anyone else like them? :)
Seems michael agrees.

GMail Starts to Chat

Gmail recently added the feature to be able to store ‘chat’ logs within your gmail account. Along side of this addition, Gmail also gives you the ability to actually chat while in the Gmail interface. It’s quite a cool feature in case you want to chat with a buddy on GTalk and you don’t have GTalk installed on your computer. I used it a couple days ago and I really liked it, it’s a fun feature.

Google Talk & Google Gmail Play Friendly

As of yesterday, Google Talk has been integrated into Google Mail (GMail) so that you can access any chat logs from conversations held using Google Talk. You need to go into the settings of your GMail account in order to activate these options, but these options are now available for anyone to use. This provides easy access for anyone that wants to keep their chat logs global. I for one, keep all my GAIM logs and it would be nice to be able to keep them global. I will consider moving over to GTalk once AIM protocol is enabled and ready for use. Another big kicker for me is that GTalk will need to have the ‘alias’ feature available like GAIM has. Oh wait, it already does! Splendid. GTalk will be the best ‘chatting’ client out there, in my opinion. With global chat logs in your inbox and the flexibility it provides, GTalk has a great future.

Google Sneaks by With Some New Terms and Conditions

While webmasters have been publishing the AdSense program, Google has been quietly adding new Terms and Conditions to the program. There is now a 90-day referral time period for publishers to refer other webmasters to the AdSense program. If a referral webmaster generates over $100 in the first 90 days of signing up, the referree will get $100 in exchange. This new T&C is not very nice to the webmasters, but Google sees it differently and put it into place without really announcing it.

Google OS & Software

“Definitely, and we have systems running over there (Google) right now,” he said. He also said that Google is thinking about whether it wants to be running its own data centers and developing its own software.

He added that Google created its own operating system to run its grids. And now there are some within Google that question whether they should continue doing that, especially since there is so much open source software, and middleware available (from Sun, of course :-) and increasingly, specialist grid builders.

Google has been thinking and rethinking the thoughts of creating their own software as such. Google OS (see below) has already been in production in various locations owned by Google, for internal use only. Google is considering outsourcing future infrastructure projects, which would make sense for them to do — but again, only time will tell what actually happens with the future of Google and its software.
